The EMF Friends’ Scheme offers you the chance to support the important work of the Festival. The EMF receives no governmental or major, long-term corporate funding; so the generosity of our Friends is invaluable in enabling the Festival to expand and develop.

The Friends’ Scheme has seven tiers, each offering an extensive range of benefits; and these are detailed on the right.

lquote To my mind, the main role of the Friends’ Scheme is to act as a “pied piper” for the English repertoire, to spread the word about the EMF and to encourage friends, family and colleagues to experience this music for themselves. The more momentum that we can generate through our Friends’ Scheme, the more we can accomplish. rquote
Brian Kay, Past Chairman of the Friends’ Scheme
and EMF vice-president
BK

The Chairman of the Friends' Scheme is Julian Lloyd Webber.

lquote English music had been crying out for a fitting celebration for many years, and it was in 2006, with the launch of the English Music Festival, that we finally achieved it. The English Music Festival is a national treasure and I will be doing all I can to help further its incredible and invaluable work. Friends are a vital part of the project, we can never have too many! rquote
Julian Lloyd Webber, Chairman, Friends’ Scheme
and EMF vice-president
JLW
Julian has enjoyed one of the most creative and successful careers in classical music today. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Music in 1994 and - in recognition of his lifelong devotion to the music of Elgar - he was elected President of the Elgar Society in 2009. He has been professor and the Principal of Birmingham Conservatoire since July 2015.

At the age of sixteen he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and he completed his studies in Geneva with the renowned cellist, Pierre Fournier.

His Brit-award winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Lord Menuhin was chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine, and his coupling of Britten’s Cello Symphony and Walton’s Concerto with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner was described by Gramophone magazine as being “beyond any rival”.

Friends' Secretary — Susan Kydd

Festival regulars will be accustomed to seeing Susan’s smiling face at the Friends’ Desk in the Abbey on Festival days. Susan finds that meeting people and getting to know them is the most enjoyable and rewarding part of her work. However, that is only a part, albeit an important one, of her role as Friends’ Secretary as most of her work is done behind the scenes throughout the year.

Susan has been a Friend of the Festival since 2006 as a way of showing her support for the excellent work being done by the Festival.

Why not stop at the Friends’ Desk at next year’s Festival to meet Susan? She would be delighted to see you.

Upon joining, you will receive a personal letter of welcome from the Chairman of the Friends’ Scheme; your membership card; and a copy of the most recent issue of Spirited, the Gazette of The English Music Festival.
